Some of the most exciting experiences for any business are those moments where they have an opportunity to make a decision that they believe truly shows what they stand for. While we could make a list of core values that generically suggest we care about certain things, below are some of the decisions we've made as a business that we believe showcase those values.
Work can be hard enough without a hot, humid summer day, or a cold, windy winter morning altering the indoor temperature of a shop. Not only does this exhaust an individual by the end of the day, it is not ideal for precision CNC machining where tenths matter.
When the Homer shop was designed, one of the first decisions made was to ensure a constant temperature regardless of the day. This led to the installation of three 10-ton HVAC units for the 9,600 square foot shop floor.
Each day of the year at RJD, whether it is the coldest or hottest day, will always be between 70-75 degrees inside.
The water and oil mixture used for coolant in machining is another common issue for machine shops, as it can contaminate the shop air and lead to poor air quality. It isn't uncommon to see fog or haze across a machine shop indicating the contaminants in the air. When RJD first began, it invested in an industry standard air filtration unit for each of its machines. However, over time it was noticed that heavy roughing applications still led to mist escaping into the air.
After plenty of research and working with customer representatives to find a solution that would make the shop air "be like that of an office," RJD reinvested in all new air filtration units by Losma. Every unit is outfitted with a "clipper," which is an add-on feature that is usually meant for smoky machining practices where even greater filtration is needed. These HEPA filters are H13 rated which enables 99.95% filtration of particles down to 0.1 microns, making them considered medical grade.
When designing the new shop, RJD wanted to prioritize individual comfort as much as possible. In the photo to the left, you can see our completed break room where we wanted a space that would feel less like your typical break area and more like a home away from home.
Additionally, RJD invested in two custom walk-in showers so that someone could elect to shower at work if needed. This would give everyone flexibility if they had plans after work and did not have time to go home.
Also, the shop was designed so that every machine would have a window, allowing anyone working to see outside and enjoy the view. In the winter months you can often arrive before it is light out and end up leaving after the sun has set. At RJD, while you may be at work, it doesn't have to feel like you are cut off from the outside.
It is one thing to offer benefits, but it is another to offer benefits that actually benefit an employee. Dozens of hours were spent researching the benefits RJD offers for its medical, dental, and 401(k) offering. Additionally, RJD pays for 80% of ALL coverage levels for medical, dental, vision, and life.
